This is the code of ethics that applies to all NASW social worker members. Please review and become familiar.

Texas Administrative Code (TAC) - Social Work

These are some of the Texas laws regarding the practice of social work.  Please review and become familiar, including the Code of Conduct - 781.301.

Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (TBHEC)

TBHEC is an umbrella organization providing regulation of Texas behavioral services and social work practice.  The council includes: Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists, Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors, Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists, and the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners.

HIPAA

"To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), Public Law 104-191, included Administrative Simplification provisions that required HHS to adopt national standards for electronic health care transactions and code sets, unique health identifiers, and security. At the same time, Congress recognized that advances in electronic technology could erode the privacy of health information. Consequently, Congress incorporated into HIPAA provisions that mandated the adoption of Federal privacy protections for individually identifiable health information."

LIABILITY INSURANCE

The link is for social worker insurance through NASW.  This is just one option for insurance.

REQUIRED BOOKS

DSM-5 or DSM-5 TR

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - 5 or 5-TR You can purchase the printed book or an e-version. If you get the paper version, I suggest also purchasing tabs - like these: DSM Tabs

Essentials of Psychiatric Diagnosis by Dr. Allen Frances, MD

Purchase the printed book or e-version.  Dr. Frances has been a top U.S. psychiatrist for many years (and Chair of the DSM-IV Task Force).  He breaks down psychiatric diagnosis in simple and clear terms.  I often reference this book when diagnosing a client.

OPTIONAL BOOKS

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (3rd Edition) - Dr. Judith S. Beck, PhD

I highly recommend learning and becoming proficient at CBT.   Not only is it one of the best and most effective treatment modalities, it is the basis for or integral to so many other interventions (DBT, ACT, EMDR, etc).

Note:  The Beck Institute provides online training and a variety of the no-cost resources (including worksheets).
